Who looks after your data
This privacy policy explains what happens to personal data when you read shepwoolley.co.uk, an independent guide to the songs of Shep Woolley and the sea songs of Portsmouth, or when you write to it. The site is published by Daniel Hartley, 38 Lawrence Road, Southsea, Portsmouth PO5 1NU, United Kingdom, who is the controller for the personal data described on this page and can be reached at [email protected] for anything on it.
The guide has no user accounts, no comment section, no newsletter and no shop. It collects as little as a website can, and this page lists all of it.
What is recorded when you visit
When your browser asks for a page, the web server and the content delivery network in front of it process the technical data that every request carries: your network address, the date and time, the page requested, the referring page if your browser sends one, and your browser and operating system. This is needed to deliver the page, to keep the site secure and to stop abuse. Under UK data protection law the basis is the legitimate interest in running a working, secure website. Server logs are kept for a short period for security and fault-finding and are then deleted; they are not used to build profiles of readers.
Cookies and tracking
The guide sets no advertising cookies and runs no analytics or tracking scripts, which is why you have not been asked to agree to anything. The delivery network may set a strictly necessary security cookie to tell real visitors from automated traffic; a cookie of that kind needs no consent. Your browser may keep the site's fonts and images in its ordinary cache, which you control and can clear in your browser settings.
The music player on the homepage stays empty until you press a play button. Only then does your browser load the SoundCloud player, and from that point SoundCloud receives your network address and may set its own cookies under its own privacy policy. If you never press play, no request goes to SoundCloud.
When you email the guide
If you write to the editors, your name, email address and message are used only to answer you and, where you send a correction or a photograph, to check it and publish it with the credit you asked for. Messages are not added to mailing lists, shared or sold, and they are deleted once the matter is closed. More on how messages are handled is on the contact page.
Your rights
Under United Kingdom data protection law you may ask what personal data is held about you, ask for it to be corrected or erased, and object to its use. Given the above, the answer in almost every case is that nothing is held beyond any correspondence you have sent. Write to the address above and you will receive a reply within one month. If you are unhappy with the answer, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
If this policy changes, the revised version replaces this one on this page.
